Admission Process (M.Tech.)

Admission Guidelines for M.Tech. Students


NIFTEM offers five uniquely designed Post Graduate Programmes, each being catered by one of the academic department at NIFTEM. These Post Graduates Programmes leading to two years regular M.Tech. degree are:

  1. M.Tech. in Food Technology and Management (FTM).
  2. M.Tech. in Food Process Engineering and Management (FPEM).
  3. M.Tech. in Food Plant Operations and Management (FPOM).
  4. M.Tech. in Food Safety and Quality Management (FSQM).
  5. M.Tech. in Food Supply Chain Management (FSCM).


Eligibility Criteria

Four Year's Bachelor's Degree or a Master's degree in relevant discipline with minimum 60% marks in aggregate. Additional programme wise requirement are as below:

Deficiency courses would be offered to the applicants with above prescribed non-food Degrees.

2. M.Tech. (FPEM) B.E./B.Tech degree in Food Science/Food Science and Technology/Food Technology and Management/Food Technology/ Food Process Engineering/Food Engineering/Dairy Engineering / Dairy Technology/ Agricultural Process Engineering/Agricultural & Food Engineering /Agricultural Engineering / Bio Chemical Engineering / Chemical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering OR in related allied field from a recognized University/Institute. Deficiency courses would be offered to the applicants with above prescribed non-food Degrees
3. M.Tech. (FPOM) B.E. /B. Tech. degree in Food Sciences/ Food Science and Technology/Food Technology and Management/Food Technology/Food Process Engineering/ Food Engineering/Dairy Engineering/ Dairy Technology/ Agricultural Process Engineering/ Agricultural and Food Engineering/ Agricultural Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University/Institute. Deficiency courses would be offered to the applicants with above prescribed non-food Degrees.
4. M.Tech. (FSQM) B.E. /B. Tech. degree in Food Sciences/ Food Science and Technology/Food Technology and Management/Food Technology/Dairy Technology/Dairy and Food Technology/Agricultural and Food Engineering/Bio Chemical Engineering/Chemical Engineering OR M.sc degree in Food Technology/Food Science and Technology/Food Microbiology from a recognized University/Institute. Applicants with M.sc degree may be asked to regsiter for deficiency course(s) as per the curriculum.
5. M.Tech. (FSCM) B.E. /B. Tech. degree in Food Science / Food Science and Technology /Food Technology and Management / Food Technology/Dairy & Food Technology/Dairy & Food Engineering/ Agricultural and Food Engineering/Four years Bachelor’s degree or a Master's degree in Agriculture with Agronomy/Horticulture/ Vegetable sciences OR M.Sc. Food Science/Food Technology/ Food Science and Technology from a recognized University/Institute. Non agriculture/Non Food candidate would be asked to register for relevant deficiency courses.


Selection Process

The admission to M.Tech. programmes will be based on a valid GATE score (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers) and personal interview (30 marks). Merit list will be prepared based on valid GATE score multiplied by 0.7 (70% weightage of GATE score) and will be added to marks obtained in the personal interview. The merit list will be displayed on the NIFTEM website. After the admission of eligible GATE qualified applicants, the remaining seats, if any, will be filled by non-GATE applicants (B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc.). Non-GATE candidates would require to qualify the Common Entrance Exam (70 marks) in place of GATE, canducted by NIFTEM at NIFTEM campus, Kundli followed by personal interview(30 marks). The Non-GATE applicants may note that the Common Entrance Exam shall not be conducted, if all seats have been filled by GATE candidates. Admit cards for the Common Entrance Exam may be downloaded from NIFTEM website, if the Exam is required to be held. No separate admit card will be posted. Updates can be seen on the website from time to time. Final merit will be prepared by combining the marks obtained in the Entrance Test and the Interview.


Pattern of Entrance Test

The written test conducted for Non-GATE candidates shall consist of seventy (70) objective type questions of mark each. There shall be negative marking and for each wrong answer 0.25 marks will be deducted. The duration of the test will be one hour. The test shall consist of two parts. Part-A shall contain twenty (20) questions to test the Mental Agility, English and General Knowledge of the candidate. Part-B shall contain fifty (50) questions to test candidate`s knowledge base in their eligibility areas. Due to varied nature of eligibility areas, the Part-B shall consist of five sections and candidates may attempt any one of them. Broad description of each section under Part-B is given below:


Part-I: Food Science and Technology, Food Engineering, Dairy Technology, Foods and Nutrition.

Part-II: Food Engineering, Agricultural Process Engineering, Bio-Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

Part-III: Food Business Management and Entrepreneurship.

Part-IV: Food Science and Technology, Foods and Nutrition, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry.

Part-V: Agriculture, Environmental Science, Food Science and Technology.
