NIFTEM Act, 2021
National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K) was established as a Centre of Excellence in the field of Food Science and Technology by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India in 2012. Up to 30 September 2021, NIFTEM-K was a Deemed to be University (De Novo Category) under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. NIFTEM-K was the only Institution in the country with a University Status exclusively in the area of Food Processing.
The NIFTEM Act 2021 was published in the Gazette of India on 30 July 2021. The NIFTEM Act 2021 came into force through the notification of the Gazette of India on 1 October, 2021.
The objectives of the legislation are, to confer the status of Institutions of National Importance (INI) to NIFTEM, Kundli, and IIFPT, Thanjavur to provide for functional autonomy to the Institutes to design and develop courses, undertake research activities and leverage enhanced status in their academic pursuits so that they become world-class institutes, and to implement the reservation policy of the Government and would also undertake special outreach activities for the benefit of concerned stakeholders.
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 of the National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Act 2021, (19 of 2021) the Central Government, made the rules and notified through the Gazette of India on 26 October 2021.
